The US monetary authority cut borrowing costs on midweek, representing the second reduction in the current year during economic turbulence originating from the government closure and trade duties.
Move Comes at Unprecedented Moment for Federal Reserve
The decision to reduce the benchmark interest rate by a quarter point to a range of 4% to 3.75% comes at an unprecedented juncture for the central bank. The institution has been under immense pressure to cut rates even with persistent inflation.
Central Bank Announcement Notes Labor Market Shifts
In a announcement, the Fed said that the unemployment rate had increased but remains low. “Employment growth have decelerated,” the statement notes. “Price increases has risen and stays moderately high.”
Government Shutdown Complicates Fed’s Job
The continuing federal government shutdown, now one of the longest in American history, has also hindered the central bank’s task. Gathering of key economic data has been indefinitely halted as employees at the Bureau of Labor Statistics are furloughed during the closure.
Information Shortage Impacts Monetary Moves
The Fed usually studies labor statistics to determine labor market conditions, such as the count of employment gains created to the economy and the current unemployment rate. The most recent employment data was published in the beginning of last month, before the shutdown, and gave a relatively bleak snapshot of the employment scene in August.
The number of jobs created to the economy in August was lower by over 100k since the spring, and joblessness crept up to four point three percent – the peak since three years ago.
Alternative Reports Show Ongoing Decline
Though the bureau was scheduled to release September’s employment data in the start of last month, it suspended its release once the shutdown started. Employment data company ADP indicated recently that the business segment eliminated 32,000 jobs in September, a sign that the job market is still decelerating.
“Both the supply and demand for labor has declined quite sharply,” Fed chair Jerome Powell said recently, a trend he had previously attributed stems from immigration and tariff policies.
Inflation Report Reveals Moderate Increase
Though BLS’s employment data has been paused, the agency still issued its price statistics for last month that showed that prices are going up, although slowly. Costs rose 3% over the last year, the highest since January. In spring, the annual inflation rate was 2.3%, the minimum it has been since 2021. The Fed’s target inflation rate is two percent.
